Skype is a wonderful platform for video calls and one of the top competitors. Microsoft says "Skype is for connecting with the people that matter most in your life and work" which holds up with their reputation. One of the cool things about Skype is that you don't even need to download it in order to use it. Just go to their live version in the browser. All you need to operate Skype is a Microsoft account. That's it. It is completely free to use.
First, go to the Google Play Store or the App Store and search "Skype" and install. Or Skype's download page to install Skype to your phone.
Second, launch the Skype app. When Skype asks for permission to access camera and microphone, agree. Skype is owned by Microsoft Corporation, so they will ask you to sign into your Microsoft account using your email, phone number, and password. If you do not have a Microsoft account, follow the steps provided by Skype to create one.
Third, you will want to click your profile icon at the top center of your screen. Set your status to active. This helps the teacher know that you are online and ready for your lesson.
Fourth, go back to the home and tap the contacts icon in the bottom right of the screen. Select the "All" tab and then tap the contact icon (top right for iPhone, bottom right for Android) and search for your teacher. Once Found, select the "Add" button.
Fifth, when your teacher calls you, make sure that your camera and microphone are on. The teacher cannot teach when those are off.
Sixth, set up your phone up in a way that the teacher can see you and what you are doing clearly. Be prepared to make adjustments if the teacher asks.
